A Memorable Occasion at the Wetlands Centre

My Daughter’s Wedding and an Encounter with Asian Small-Clawed Otters

One of the most cherished moments in my life was attending my daughter’s wedding, which took place at the Wetlands Centre in London. The day was filled with joy and celebration, set against the beautiful backdrop of the Centre’s natural environment. Amidst the festivities, I had the unique opportunity to meet the Asian small-clawed otters, a species native to regions across South East Asia, including Southern India, southern China, and neighbouring countries.

The Asian Small-Clawed Otters

These fascinating otters are currently classified as vulnerable to extinction. Their population is under threat due to several factors, such as poaching, illegal trafficking for the pet trade, pollution, and the ongoing loss of their habitat. It is estimated that only around 5,000 Asian small-clawed otters remain in the wild, and their numbers continue to decline. Notably, they are recognised as the smallest species of otter in existence.

Observing and Capturing the Otters

During my time at the Wetlands Centre, I was able to spend many happy moments observing these otters in their habitat. I took the opportunity to create quick sketches and capture photographs of them, drawing inspiration from their playful behaviour and distinctive features.

Artistic Inspiration

The sketches and photographs from that day became the foundation for my subsequent artwork. Using chalk pastels, I drew a painting that reflects my memorable encounter with the Asian small-clawed otters, combining my artistic passion with the special memories of my daughter’s wedding.
